Orange County Rare Plant Surveys and Botanical Inventory

The Irvine Company donated 2,400 acres as open space to support the County of Orange’s Coastal and Central Subregion of Natural Communities Conservation Plan/Habitat Conservation Plan (NCCP/HCP). Leatherman BioConsulting, Inc. was contracted for three years to assist in a large-scale botanical inventory to document plant diversity and to locate, map, and estimate the population size of all special status plant species within a preserved habitat. The locations and extent of each special status plant species were mapped in the field using handheld GPS units and downloaded into mapping software to develop a GIS database with all plant populations.

Over 400 taxa were observed. Ten rare plants were detected during the surveys, including the San Diego Sunflower, Catalina mariposa lily, intermediate mariposa lily, small-flowered morning glory, many-stemmed dudleya, chocolate lily, Palmer’s grappling-hook, Southern California walnut, Robinson’s peppergrass, Arizonia cottonrose, chaparral rein orchid, and Coulter’s Matilija poppy. Over 22,335 rare plants were recorded in 2023.
