Canyon Fire Special Status Plant Survey & Botanical Inventory

Canyon Fire Special Status Plant Survey & Botanical Inventory

The Canyon Fires, which spread through north Orange County in the fall of 2017, resulted in the catastrophic loss of many homes and an estimated 11,800 acres of vegetation and wildlife habitat. Leatherman BioConsulting, Inc., was contracted to assist in a large-scale botanical inventory to document plant diversity and locate, map, and estimate the population size of all notable status plant species within the Canyon Fire footprints in preserved habitat.

The locations and extent of each unique status plant species were mapped in the field using handheld GPS units and downloaded into mapping software to develop a GIS database with all plant populations. Ten rare plants were detected during the surveys. One is the federally endangered Braunton’s milkvetch (Astragalus brauntonii), a scarce species germinating and persisting for short periods in recently burned areas. Special status plant populations were recorded at 338 points, and extensive populations were mapped in 96 polygons.
