Camp Pendleton Burrowing Owl Habitat Assessment and Survey
The burrowing owl is a candidate for listing by CDFW. Biologists at Leatherman BioConsulting, Inc. have extensive experience conducting focused burrowing owl surveys throughout southern California following guidelines prepared by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. In 2016, We were contracted to ground truth a GIS model of burrowing owl habitat and conducted a base-wide survey for the burrowing owl on Camp Pendleton.
A total of 31 wintering burrowing owls and 47 occupied burrows were observed during the ground truth phase of the project. Focused surveys for nesting burrowing owls were conducted throughout the base in all suitable grassland habitats. Leatherman BioConsulting, Inc. biologists directed the survey crews, received Range Safety Officer (RSO) training and acted as RSO during burrowing owl surveys, and used Trimble Geo GPS to record data, navigate to survey polygons, and conduct 100% coverage survey.
